Job Overview

Paladin, the shiny knight in armor. The holy warriors of each party. Paladins are not only the tank of the party, they are in essense the leader of a party. Players tend to look at Paladins for direction as to where to go and what to do when out exping. As a Paladin your role is to ensure the survival of your party when out exping by directing the mob to be hitting you and only you. However not everyone make good leaders or like to be in a leadership role. If you prefer to just sit back and tank then that work fine too. And not all Paladins are good tanks, tanking and maintaining hate does take a bit of skills. It's important for players to know how to tank properly because as the tank, your party survival depends on your skills. Paladin is defense over offense, so if you prefer to be doing major damage on a mob then look else where. As a Paladin you basically acting as the bait for mobs to be attacking you while your party members attack the mob. All parties must have a tank in order to function properly, and this game only really have two jobs that function best as a main tank in post level 50, Ninjas and Paladins. With that in mind, your invites to party are fairly at an even pace so you won't have to worry too much about long waits for an exp party. Another advantage is that maintaining a Paladin job is fairly cheap when compare to being a tank as a Ninja. Heroes in shiny white armors, are you one of them?

Sword and shield is the ideal choice for a Paladin. It's the perfect balance between offense and defense for Paladins. A second choice would be great swords. Paladins have Rank B with great sword so if there is situation where you prefer to have a bit more offensive damage then switch to a great sword. In fact all Paladins should learn to tank with a great sword and keep its combat skill up. Great sword is also an ideal weapon of choice when you are out farming. Another choice of weapon type is staff. Paladin surprisingly have a Rank A with staff. This I assume is so Paladin can better make use of their white magic spells. However most Paladin prefer to have a bit more offensive power while they are tanking so they chose to ignore using staff. Still there is one good staff that is very useful for a Paladin to have and its the Earth staff so keeping your staff skills at a decent level will not go to waste.

Sub Job Combos

Pld/War: This is really the only job combo available for a Paladin to make them effective as a tanker. For a Paladin, it's all about defense and from the Warrior job, you get a bonus in your Defense Bonus trait and the all important abilities, Provoke, to help grab hate, and Defender, to help boost defense even more. It's also nice to have Double Attack and Attack Bonus later on at the higher level so you can do a bit more damage to get some hate as well. But really the two main reasons are Provoke and Defender.

Pld/Whm: This is by far the rarest of the sub job choices and takes a lot of talent. It's not as impractical as some of you may think. While the standard is having Warrior as the only sub job, you need to think outside of the box and having a White Mage as a sub job can be done too. However it takes a lot and I mean a lot of talent to be using White Mage as a sub as oppose to using a Warrior. You lose out on defense bonuses that you would normally get from a Warrior sub as well as the important Provoke ability but you gain more MP and access to Mages healing spells that you don't normally get with a Warrior sub. How do you grab hate? By flashing and curing. As a Pld/Whm, your goal is to heal yourself and your party members to maintain hate on you. In essence you be spamming Cures and Curagas on yourself to maintain hate control. It's the same way that a White Mage can accidentally grab hate off of a mob, by curing party members and spamming curaga on party members. This is the unconventional way of tanking and it takes a lot of skills. I've only seen and known JP players as the one to actually do this. Even if you want to try this job combo, your invite will be slow to none due to the fact that people won't trust you and trust that unconventional way of tanking, especially from a none JP party.

Paladin Job Quest

Locatioin: South San D'Oria
Client: Balasiel
Reward: Able to be a Paladin
Requirements: A level 30 job on hand.
Items Needed: Revival Tree Root, Stalactite Dew, & Knight's Soul

To begin the Paladin Quest you need to do 3 mini quests for Balasiel first. Talk to Balasiel at F-7 in South San D'Oria once you reach level 10. Balasiel will give you three Test quests.

A Squire's Test: Balasiel wants you to get him a Revival Tree Root. You can get this by killing undead mobs. However to make things go faster, just buy a revival tree root from the auction house under Materials--->Alchemy. Trade him the revival tree root to finish this quest.

A Squire's Test II: Talk to Balasiel again after you finish the first Test quest, this time he wants you to prove to him that you've been to Ordelle's Cave. You need to talk to two people to get this going. Go down below where Balasiel is and talk to Chanpau. Chanpau tells you that you can bring Balasiel a Stalactite Dew as the proof. Now head to the Cathedral in North San D' Oria and talk to Morjean in the Manuscript Room. He'll tell you how to get the Stalactite Dew.
Now go to area F-6 of La Theine Plateau and enter the Ordelle's Caves through the crack. Travel through the caves until you reach the waterfalls at G-7. On the east side is a small pool of sparking water; check this area over carefully for a ???. In the middle of G-7 is a cave formation. When you check this area for ???, you will obtain the stalactite dew. Special note here. You need to check the first ??? quickly near the pool of water then run over the check the second ??? at the cave formation to get the Stalactite Dew. If you don't do it quickly enough you won't be able to get it. Try to be near level 30 when doing this or else nasty things inside the Cave will be aggroing you and killing you. Return to Balasiel with the item to obtain a Squire Certificate.

A Knight's Test: This is the beginning of the Paladin job quest. In order to get this quest, you need to be level 30 and then talk to Balasiel after finishing his other two quests. You need to read a couple of books and then get an item for Balasiel. To get the Book of the East, talk to Cahaurme who is standing guard high above East Ronfaure gateside at K-9. To get the Book of the West, talk to Baunis who is standing guard high above West Ronfaure gateside at G-9. After reading and getting both books, you need to get a Knights Soul in Davio and bring it back to Balasiel. You can solo this part but make sure to get lots of prism oils and silent oils. Also it helps you if you brought a map if Davio. Head to Jugner Forest and enter Davio at G-12 of the forest. Once you're in Davio get prism oils on. Orcs aggro to sight so you need prism oil to make yourself invisible. Head over to I-8 in Davio and drop down to the river. Pupils roam the river so at this point make sure to have silent oil on as Pupils aggro to sound. With both sneak and invisible on, follow the river south a bit and then turn west and follow the river all the way to D-8. The only thing that will aggro you during your trek in the river is Pupils but with sneak on it should be a problem. Now get out of the river at D-8 but make sure to have sneak and invisible on. Make your way south to E-10 where the well is at. Once you're at the well, take invisible off but keep sneak on as there might be a Jelly type of mob guarding the well. It won't aggro you if you have sneak on. Examine the well to get the Knight Soul. Once you have the Knight Soul, you can death warp back to San D'Oria or use an instant warp scroll. Talk to Balasiel again and he will award you with the Paladin job unlock.
