Getting Started Level 1-10
You just got this game and not want to get started but not sure on what to do? Hopefully we can answer some question for you.

Q. What race should I be?

A. Each race has it's advantages and disadvantages. You can see some of the stats on the races over at the Races section of the site. For the most part, it really doesn't make too much of a different on what race you want to play. Any disadvantages that a race has in a particular stats can be even out by wearing the right gear to boost the weakness in stats that that race has. For example, Galkan are a race with low MP so making a Galkan and having it be a mage job isn't too practical. However you can wearing equipment or accessories to boost your MP to make up for that weakness. But in general try to use common sense when picking a race and choosing a main job for your character as race do play a role in it. You don't want to be wasting gil on buying gear that boost the stats weakness of a particular race when you can use that gil on something else.

Q. What job should I be?

A. Each job has a unique role in a party. There's no job that is better than the other as each job plays a vital role in a party. However it's best to pick a job that you really are interested in playing as oppose to a job that get quick invites to party. This game is all about fun and you want to have fun playing a job you like. You can read more on what each job does in the job section.

Q. What city should I choose?

A. Again there's really no difference in what city you should choose other than maybe a preference in city design and the race of that city its aimed at. San D'Oria is a more friendly design city and where most of the players tend to pick. Bastok is probably the second most popular city that players like to pick while Windurst is usually third in players preference. For beginners I would say San D'Oria as you can learn to navigate in that city a lot quickly and the areas that surrounds that city is easier to level in as well as travel in.

Q. I'm in the game, I'm so lost I don't know what to do. Help me, I'm new.

A. Well you can be like a player name, Aikakaka, and stand there looking lost saying "I don't speak english very well, I'm Italian." and hopefully another player like yours truly come along and see you looking lost and help you out or you can start to take a long around the city. First thing is to familiarize yourself with the city you are in. There's no need to run out to start fighting right away. Take a tour of the city you are just in. When you enter the game, the game will have you find a NPC and trade an item to it. This is an introduction of basically learning how to trade. Do so. Open up the main menu and check out the maps and find the NPC.

Q. What areas should I check out?

A. First thing you want to do is head to your Moogle House known as Residential Area. This is the place where you'll be storing your items and changing jobs. Get familiar with your Moogle House. Second thing you want to do check out the various shops and guilds in the city. Just so you know where the shops are. Third thing you want to do and get yourself familar with is the Auction House. The Auction House is where you'll be buying and selling most of your things. Not from shops but from auction house. Last thing you want to do is find the crystal near the gates of the city to set up your Home Point. Setting up your Home Point is important as this is where you'll be warping to if you die.

Q. Buying and Selling?

A. Never sell to shops because you basically get nothing in return. Always sell to auction house as sometime you get more in return than what you brought it for or you'll break even with the price you brought it for. Only sell it to shops if you really can't unload the item at auction house. In the most cases you should also buy from auction house. However before buying you should check out the various prices in the shops in your city. Sometimes some of the items on auction house actually cost more than what it would normally sell at shops. Buy low and sell high it the motto. Be a good shopper and not a reckless one.

Q. This game is pretty huge, where can I get help?

A. The key to being a good player is be a resourceful player. Study up on the game, missions, and quests. You can find such information easily from online websites dedicated to Final Fantasy XI. Knowledge is power so the more you know what to do, the better off you are. Don't be lazy and rely on others in the game for your gaming information on what to do. You help yourself off better by studying and looking up on quests than simply asking others about it all the time.

Q. Where can I find guide for beginners that's not online so I can read it while playing this game?

A. Brady's Official Final Fantasy XI guide is great for beginners. While the guide itself is quite outdated, the information it provide for beginners are excellent. Once you become a more experience player, the only place is with online website.

Q. Should I join a Linkshell?

A. Linkshell or those colorful pearls on most of the players you see around you are very helpful to new players. They act like a clan and a great way for new players to get help within their clans. However it is hard for new players to find the Linkshell that fit them. The best way is to start asking about various Linkshell when you're in your teens and partying with other players and start making friends with them and see what sort of Linkshell they belong to and whether or not it's the Linkshell for you. Don't shout for a Linkshell just because you are new. Good Linkshell don't need to be just randomly handlng out pearls to any random players shouting for a Linkshell. Linkshell that does that are ones that's more interested in members count than members quality. Remember a Linkshell that has lots of members doesn't mean it's good. Just means there's lots of spam and annoying chatter that you don't need later on when you are a more experience player.

Q. Enough already, how do I fight?

A. Okay, before you begin to level up, pick a job or change into a job you like in your moogle house. Head to a gate outside of your city. Before you actually head outside to fight, get signet cast from one of the NPC guard gate who's name end with a couple of initials. Make sure before heading out to fight to always cast signel. Once that's done then just zone outside of the city and you can begin fighting your first mob (monster).

Q. What's the deal with signet and conquest point?

A. When you have signet cast on you while you are fighting, each time you kill a mob that doesn't check as Too Weak To Be Worthwhile, you are earning a small amount of conquest point for your nation. Accumulative conquest points can be traded into the NPC that cast signet for valueable items to use or sell. Also with signel cast on you, crystals will be dropped from mobs. Crystals are a good source for crafting and selling at Auction House and one of the main ways for you to make money in the early stages in the game. Without signet cast on you, no crystal will drop and conquest points are recorded. Of course this only applies to mobs that are stronger than Too Weak To Be Worthwhile.

Q. How do I start a Missions?

A. At every gate there should be a lone guard standing at the side of the gate. Talk to that guard to begin a mission. The guard will tell you about the mission and you have the option of picking up that mission. Once you pick it up, you can check your Mission Menu from the Main Menu to see if you have the mission log. Once you complete the mission, talk to the mission gate guard again to complete it.

Q. Can't get next mission?

A. If you completed a mission and what to pick up the next mission than just talk to the mission gate guard again. If no new mission shows up then it means your rank bar or rank points is too low. You can check out your Rank Bar by checking your Profile in the Main Menu. To increase your rank bar you can do a repeated mission over again or you can trade a stack of any crystals to the signet casting NPC. Once you have enough rank points then talk to the mission guard again to see a new mission appearing.

Q. Should I do quests?

A. Yes. A lot of players tend to miss out on quests early on and just level. Heck even some of the more experience players still don't do quests. Some quests are very important to get valuable items as well as certain features in the game. To get the good important quests to open up for you to accept you need to have a good fame within the city of the NPC quest givers. In order to get good fame, you need to do quests which is why it's important to start on quest early on in the game. Quest not only introduces you to a good learning tool on how to play the game but it also rewards you with city fame and some items.

Q. Can you give me some gil?

A. No. Rule #1 in this game is don't be a gil begger. There are many ways to make gil and begging in not one of them. New players should be aware of this as most players do not like gil beggers. Yes sometimes the learning curve of different players are slower than others, especially the younger players who you see standing around asking for gils but don't beg for gils. Ask on tips on how to make gil at your level is the better way to go than annoying other players. You don't want people to blacklist you for it.

Q. Blacklist, what's that?

A. Blacklist is when another player type in your name in their blacklist where any communication from you is no longer heard from that player. To simply put, they see you but can no longer hear you. This is to avoid from being annoyed with you.

Q. What's a GM?

A. GM are General Managers that monitor the game and help resolve problems within the community of FFXI. Such problems can be dispute between other players or dealing with players that tried to deliberately kill other players by sending a mob onto them. This is known as MPK. Players who get in trouble with GM end up in jail or get their account suspended.

Q. Jail? You go to jail here?

A. Yes. If you get in trouble with a GM, your character get put in an area that they can't ever get out off without the help of a GM. So try not to do anything that will get you in trouble with a GM.
